Flyers: The Most Effective Tool for Finding Your Missing Pet

When a pet goes missing, every minute matters. While social media is a powerful tool for spreading awareness, it shouldn’t be the only tool you rely on and it definitely shouldn’t replace real-world visibility.
At TRAPS, we’ve managed many missing pet cases, and one thing stands out every single time: the majority of sightings come from flyers, not from social media posts. Flyers reach the people who are physically in the area where your pet is likely hiding or traveling. Commuters, walkers, neighbors, delivery drivers, and joggers are far more likely to notice a flyer than a post online.
If you want sightings, flyers are the key. Below is everything you need to know to make and post them effectively.
What Every Flyer Must Include
A good flyer needs to be easy to read from a distance and easy to understand at a glance. To get the most visibility, always include:
1. A large, clear photo
Choose a bright, high-quality image showing your pet’s face and body. Avoid collages or small photos.
2. “MISSING” or “LOST” in large, bold letters
This should be the most prominent text, preferably at the top.
3. A single contact number
Use the number where you will answer immediately. Make it large and bold.
Optional but helpful:
"Do not call, chase, or attempt to catch"
“Please check cameras”
Keep the text simple. Too much information makes the flyer harder to read quickly.
How to Prepare and Protect Your Flyers
Standard 8.5" x 11" Flyers
These are best for:
Neighborhoods
Residential streets
Parks
Walking routes
Anywhere traffic moves 35 mph or slower
To protect your flyers outdoors:
Laminate them or place them in sheet protectors
Always place the sheet protector open end facing down to prevent rain from entering
For durability, we recommend Gorilla® Crystal Clear Repair Tape. It’s strong, waterproof, and UV-resistant

Large Yard-Sale Size Flyers
Use these in areas where traffic moves faster than 35 mph, such as:
Busy roads
Major intersections
High-traffic entrances to neighborhoods
Commercial corridors
Bigger signs allow drivers to read the key details without slowing down. We like yard sale size signs in bright colors (yellow, orange, or pink work great). You can purchase blank signs or make them from poster board or foam board.
Where to Place Flyers
Place flyers where people naturally slow down or gather:
Intersections and stop signs
Walking paths and trail entrances
Entrances to neighborhoods
Near schools and parks
Community mail kiosks (not mailboxes)
Local businesses (with permission)
Coffee shops, gas stations, and store bulletin boards
You should also hand-deliver or drop off flyers at:
Veterinarian offices
Pet stores
Groomers
Rules to Follow
To respect the community and avoid fines or conflicts:
❌ Never place flyers inside mailboxes (this is a federal offense)
❌ Never post on private property without permission
❌ Don’t cover other people’s flyers
✔ Know your city or county’s posting rules
✔ Remove flyers once your pet is safely home
Why Flyers Work Better Than Social Media
Even in the age of smartphones, flyers outperform online posts in TRAPS cases, every time.
Flyers reach:
Neighbors who don’t use social media
Delivery drivers who cover large areas
Early morning and late-night walkers
Commuters who travel past the same locations daily
People who may not be part of local online groups
Algorithms can hide posts. Flyers don’t. They stay visible 24/7 and catch the attention of the exact people who are physically present where your pet may be roaming.
